IPL Skin Resurfacing

Photofacial for Pigment & Tone

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy targets sun damage, hyperpigmentation, redness, and vascular lesions — delivering a more even, youthful complexion with minimal downtime.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Skin Resurfacing, also known as a photofacial, is one of the most effective treatments for addressing the visible signs of sun damage, aging, and vascular irregularities. By delivering precise pulses of broad-spectrum light energy into the skin, IPL targets chromophores — the pigmented cells and hemoglobin in blood vessels — without damaging the surrounding tissue.

Key Benefits

Reduces sun spots, age spots, and freckles

Improves redness and rosacea

Treats vascular lesions and broken capillaries

Evens skin tone and improves complexion clarity

Stimulates collagen production

Minimal downtime — 1–2 days of mild redness

Progressive improvement with a series of treatments

Suitable for face, neck, chest, and hands

Non-invasive with no needles

Safe for most skin types (Fitzpatrick I–IV)

How IPL Works

IPL devices emit multiple wavelengths of light simultaneously, unlike lasers which emit a single wavelength. This broad-spectrum approach allows IPL to target multiple chromophores — melanin (pigment) and oxyhemoglobin (in blood vessels) — in a single treatment session.

When the light energy is absorbed by melanin in sun spots or freckles, it heats and destroys the pigmented cells. These damaged cells rise to the surface and flake off over the following 1–2 weeks, revealing clearer skin beneath. When absorbed by hemoglobin in blood vessels, the heat causes the vessel walls to collapse and be reabsorbed by the body.

What IPL Can Treat

Sun damage and photoaging: Sun spots, age spots, freckles, and the general dullness and uneven tone caused by years of UV exposure. Vascular lesions: Rosacea, facial redness, broken capillaries, spider veins, and port wine stains. Hyperpigmentation: Melasma (with careful selection), post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone.

Skin texture and collagen: The heat generated by IPL stimulates fibroblast activity and collagen production, improving skin texture and firmness over time. Hair removal: IPL can also be used for hair removal, though dedicated laser hair removal systems typically provide more precise results.

Your IPL Treatment Experience

Your treatment begins with a thorough skin assessment to confirm IPL is appropriate for your skin type and concerns. We apply a cool gel to the treatment area and provide protective eyewear. The IPL handpiece is placed against the skin and delivers a series of light pulses — most patients describe the sensation as a rubber band snap or mild stinging.

Treatment takes 20–45 minutes depending on the area treated. Immediately after, the skin may appear red and sun spots may darken — this is normal and expected. Over the following 1–2 weeks, the darkened spots will rise to the surface and flake off, revealing clearer skin. Most patients require 3–5 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart for optimal results.

Am I a Good Candidate?

IPL is most effective for patients with lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–IV) who have sun damage, hyperpigmentation, redness, or vascular irregularities. It is not recommended for patients with very dark skin tones (Fitzpatrick V–VI) due to the risk of hypopigmentation, or for patients with active tans. It is not recommended during pregnancy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many IPL treatments will I need?

+

Most patients require 3–5 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart for optimal results. Maintenance treatments 1–2 times per year help sustain results and address new sun damage.

What does the skin look like after IPL?

+

Immediately after treatment, the skin may appear red and sun spots may darken. Over the following 1–2 weeks, the darkened spots will rise to the surface and flake off. This is normal and expected — it means the treatment is working.

Can I get IPL if I have rosacea?

+

Yes. IPL is one of the most effective treatments for rosacea and facial redness. The light energy targets the hemoglobin in dilated blood vessels, causing them to collapse and be reabsorbed by the body.
